Saturday, I surprised my husband with a Special Day Away…just the TWO of us!

It was our 9 year wedding anniversary on Tuesday but with a full work week and three kids, we didn’t find the time to celebrate properly. We didn’t even exchange cards.

I had my sister come over for a sleepover Friday night, so we could sneak off early in the morning. A kid-free, work-free, stress-free day. Just us!

Our favorite place to visit when it’s just the two of us is Mary Hill Museum. We can take our time, slowly meander from Exhibit to Exhibit, actually “reading” each and every plaque.
No pulling children down from rafters and off of 17th Century Relics.

We could simply soak in the lovely works of art and pieces of Pacific Northwest History all around us.

The grounds of the Museum have beautiful Peacocks that gracefully mosey about the Gardens. They fit in perfectly with the serene surroundings and the pieces of local art scattered throughout.

The drive up the Gorge was equally lovely. The scenery, the company of each other….

Not to mention, we had no children to constantly interrupt us on the drive. No fights to break up.
Quarrels to settle.
Ahhhhhhhhhh….peace and quiet. Time to reconnect.

It’s comforting to know, that after 9 years together (and over 7 of which have been as Parents), we still enjoy spending time together. Just the two of us!

passing the symbol…

well, today was a very eventful day.

my folks watched the kiddo’s all day so Jason and I could get what was left finished!

finished.

a word that, lately, seems to have lost it’s definition.

just when I’ve finished one thing, two or three more pop up beside me,
behind me,
in front of me,
all around me!

and even after spending the entire day over at the old place, we still have to go back tomorrow!
again, un-finished!

all that’s left to do is clean out the refrigerator, sweep the garage and then haul a truckload of things to Goodwill.

after that, we get to deal with the walk-through with the landlord and the passing over of the keys.

the keys.

the symbol of the past 3 years of our family’s life. all the memories and milestones forged into one small piece of metal.

and we have to hand it over to someone else. as if it were no big deal.

the whole time I spent cleaning the place, I thought of different tiny little moments that happened in each room that I went into.

in the kitchen.
baking cookies with the kids. all three of them teetering on one chair on their tippie-toes.
the kids helping me unload the dishwasher.

their bedroom.
the small 8×8 space where they were crammed together. where I tucked them in at night. where I said them their prayers and kissed their foreheads.
where I banished them to, when they were getting on my very last nerve.

the bathroom.
where the kids took their communion bath. brushed their teeth. played in the toilet. played in the sink.

and then there’s the master bedroom. where my husband and I could finally get together and compare notes for the day. with out interruption. talk about things that don’t involve Dora the Explorer or how cool mud is!

I only cried a couple times while cleaning the house. I figure it’s practice.

for tomorrow.

when we pass on our symbol.

I cried more than a few tears when we said good-bye to our first home in Medford. It was a bittersweet day, leaving the place where we had built so many memories and welcomed our first child together.

But trust me, after you live a few weeks in the new house with room! to! move! it will get easier

That’s so bittersweet. I do that and we aren’t even moving. There’s just something about children that makes you so wistful about them. Maybe it’s because they are growing in and out of things so quickly and it all seems to leave you a little breathless, happy, and sad.

It’s the last day of color week and today is blue.

There is plenty to go around when the sky peaks through the clouds.

This week has actually made me more aware of the things around me.

Taking notice of the little things that I normally overlook and in turn, take for granted.

Soaking up all the colors of each and every day.

What a wonderful world.

I just made my 100th etsy sale this week, so there’s a celebratory surprise in store!

thirty years ago today, the U.S.S.R. performed nuclear tests at Novaya Zemlya, U.S.S.R.
Ringo released his “Ringo the 4th” album.
and my mother was relieved of her 12 thousand hour labor with me.

this is not a big deal, people. it’s not.
I know a hand full of people who have made it to thirty and guess what?
they’re still alive.

I don’t even celebrate my birthday.
so this really, really isn’t a big deal.

now, can you guys please tell everyone else on the planet that?

seriously, what gives?
people act as if 30 is the magic number that when you reach it, your hair suddenly turns gray, your spine bends forward slightly and you make an appointment with the local Mortuary to look at silk color swatches for the lining of your casket.

every birthday that has come and gone, I have walked away from, unscathed.
no bruises.
no soars.
no pain.

actually, I look back at my life after thirty years and I see all that I have accomplished….

teenage modeling gig .
(try not to laugh at the dress!)

my baptism.

my wedding day.

going back to school to get my High School diploma.
(while working part time with a 3 year old and 1 year old at home.)

oh. and I made THESE.

okay. so the guy in the Wedding Day photo helped me make ‘em.

but still, just look at what a great job we I did!

and I threw in that Fall Fashion show at 16 just for good measure!
I mean, it was fun doing it and for a while, I actually had the fleeting thought that the super model life might be in my future.

then it dawned on me, I just don’t enjoy the “5 M&M’s and a pack of cigarettes for lunch” diet.

all in all, I have had some great experiences.
and look!

I even have my own Shrine.

slowing down

staying home to raise my 3 young children has caused me to reach down deep within my self and re-discover things that I have ALWAYS yearned to do and create, but never had time for before. how funny that having children would create more “time” for myself? time to ponder and reflect…and imagine again. just like when I was a child , simple things, that as an adult, you seem to overlook(or ignore). it’s as if my children have magically instilled in me the gift of time travel…I can instantly, wherever I may be, pause the stresses of adulthood and rewind to simpler, carefree, innocent times. and all I have to do to travel there is look into my children’s‘ eyes, their excitement as they tell me about their day. and the oh so beautiful sound of, “I love you, mommy”. it just reminds you to slow down a bit and to do some of the things that you’ve been longing to do for so long. for me, it means creating things. as a young family of five on one income, I’ve learned to “create” things myself simply out of financial lack. it finally occurred to me what deep satisfaction I get from doing it and how much calmer it makes me.I think I am a better mother to my children because of it. and so, I will continue to create… while they play.
